PUTRAJAYA, March 26 (Bernama) — The Malaysia Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit 2024 in July will be a platform to set clearer directions and actions towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib said the two-day summit, organised by the Ministry of Economy and the National SDG Centre as joint organisers, will also be attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“The organisation of this summit is the government’s commitment to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 objectives known as SDGs.

“We are aware that all efforts related to the SDGs have been progressively implemented since 2016, based on the Malaysia Plan every five years, starting from the 11th Malaysia Plan,” she said at the pre-launch ceremony of the summit here today.

“As such, the government hopes that the participation of various parties in the second SDG Summit will produce input and feedback that can also help the government prepare the 13MP for 2025-2030.

“This SDG Summit will be a platform for participants from all walks of life to expand the network and further collaborate to find the best solution and implementation,” she said.

Based on an assessment by the United Nations Office in Malaysia, she said Malaysia had achieved 64 per cent of the 17 SDG targets on schedule. The remaining 36 per cent of the goals were not on schedule, including matters related to climate change, she said.

“This means that we need to move faster and go beyond what we are doing now. More efforts and improvements can be made, including communicating a clear understanding of the SDGs at all levels,” she said.

Hanifah Hajar said policymakers, experts and industry leaders will have the chance to exchange views through panel discussions, workshops and keynote speeches during the summit.

“The topics to be discussed will touch on various aspects of life that will lead to sustainable prosperity for all.

“This event will also include a dialogue to assess the achievement of the SDGs in Malaysia. Participants will be able to provide inputs and feedback on various sustainable development issues,” she said.

She said the inputs and feedback will enable the government to identify gaps and challenges that can be improved and overcome for the country’s benefit.

“We are committed to jointly creating good policies with input from the people, especially those that are suitable for the well-being of future generations,” she said.

“We want target groups to be involved at all levels so that the 17 goals of the 2030 Agenda can be achieved,” she said.
